Kimi K3.1 Pro Review: Can It Replace Claude for Laravel Developers?

This Kimi K3.1 Pro review starts with the answer. On paper, Kimi K3.1 Pro can’t replace Claude for daily Laravel work yet, but it is a strong second option. It is not free: its API costs exactly the same per token as Claude Sonnet 5.5. It is not open yet either: Moonshot says the weights come by 4 November 2026, under an open-weight license, not an open-source one. On Moonshot’s own coding benchmarks it lands close to Claude Opus 5.5, ahead on some tests and far behind on others.

This is an on-paper review. Every number below comes from Moonshot’s and Anthropic’s official pages, which I checked on 29 October 2026. I didn’t run a live test for this article, so I don’t show any results I didn’t measure. Instead, I give you a fair test you can run on your own Laravel app in about 30 minutes.

What Kimi K3.1 Pro really is

Kimi K3.1 Pro is the new flagship model from Moonshot AI, the Chinese lab behind the Kimi apps. It came out on 23 October 2026.

  • Size: a mixture-of-experts model in the 3-trillion-parameter class. It is a post-trained version of Kimi K3 (2.8T total parameters, 104B active per token).
  • Context: 1 million tokens (1,048,576).
  • Input: text, images and video. You can paste a screenshot of a Laravel error page, not just the stack trace.
  • Thinking: always on. There is no fast, non-thinking mode. You control speed with the reasoning effort setting (low, high or max; max is the default).

“Open” means open weight, and not yet

The older Kimi K3 has its weights on Hugging Face. K3.1 Pro doesn’t yet. Moonshot’s launch post says the full weights “will be released by Nov 4, 2026”.

The K3 license is based on MIT, with conditions:

  • A product with more than 100 million monthly active users or more than $20 million a month in revenue must show “Kimi K3” in its interface.
  • Selling the model as a service above $20 million in revenue a year needs a separate agreement.

For most freelancers and small teams, that’s fine. But it is not an OSI open-source license, so call it open weight in your company docs, not open source. Moonshot hasn’t published a separate license for K3.1 Pro yet.

Is Kimi K3.1 Pro really free?

Only a small part of it. Here are the prices as of 29 October 2026.

API prices (per million tokens)

ModelInputOutput
Kimi K3.1 Pro$2.00$10.00
Kimi K3.1 Pro high speed$4.00$20.00
Claude Sonnet 5.5$2.00$10.00
Claude Opus 5.5$4.00$20.00

That’s the surprise: Kimi K3.1 Pro costs exactly the same as Claude Sonnet 5.5. The saving is only against Opus, which is double.

A quick example: a coding session that reads 1 million tokens and writes 200,000 costs about $4 on Kimi or Sonnet, and about $8 on Opus.

App plans (billed yearly)

PlanPrice per monthCoding tool
Kimi Free$0K3.1 Pro in the web chat, “limited usage” (Moonshot doesn’t say how much). No Kimi Code.
Kimi Plus$15Kimi Code with K3.1 Pro
Kimi Pro$31Adds the high-speed version
Kimi Max$79More usage
Claude Pro$17Includes Claude Code

Can you run it yourself for free?

Not on a laptop. Moonshot recommends 64 or more accelerators for K3. Once the weights are out, self-hosting makes sense for companies that must keep code on their own hardware and already have a data center. For everyone else, the API is cheaper.

So the honest words are: cheaper than Opus, the same as Sonnet. Not free.

Set up Kimi K3.1 Pro for Laravel work

You have three ways in:

  1. Kimi Code (terminal, Plus plan or higher). Open it in your Laravel project, type /model, and choose Kimi K3.1 Pro.
  2. The API. The model ID is kimi-k3.1-pro. Copy it exactly (see the errors section for why). Moonshot’s API is compatible with the OpenAI and Anthropic formats.
  3. OpenRouter, if you already use one key for many models: moonshotai/kimi-k3.1-pro.

On the Claude side, the same job is Claude Code with Sonnet 5.5. Same price per token, so it’s a fair match. If you want Claude’s top model, that’s Opus, at twice the price.

A fair test you can run on your own app

Benchmarks are a hint. Your own code is the truth. This test takes about 30 minutes.

  1. Create a fresh Laravel 13 app with Pest and the API routes:
laravel new ticket-test --pest
cd ticket-test
php artisan install:api
  1. Copy the folder twice: ticket-kimi and ticket-claude.
  2. Give both tools the same prompt:
Build a support ticket API in this Laravel 13 app.
- A Ticket model and migration: title, body, status (open, pending, closed).
- A Form Request for validation and an API Resource for the output.
- Routes: list, create, show, update.
- Business rule: a closed ticket can't be reopened (return 422).
- Write Pest feature tests, run php artisan test, and fix anything that fails.
  1. Score both on five things:
CheckKimiClaude
First php artisan test run passes?
Extra prompts needed
Time to green
Cost (from the usage page)
Closed-ticket rule really works?
  1. Then read the code, not just the tests. Is the validation in the Form Request, or stuffed into the controller? Does the Resource return only the fields you want?

Use the same kind of tool on both sides: both terminals, or both web chats. That’s what keeps it fair.

My rule from client work at mouhimen.dev: never switch models because of a chart. Switch because it passed your own tests.

What the benchmarks say, and what they don’t

These are Moonshot’s own numbers, at maximum effort. They are not independent tests.

BenchmarkKimi K3.1 ProClaude Opus 5.5
Terminal-Bench 4.065.7%66.4%
SWE-Marathon51.746.3
DeepSWE75.574.2
ProgramBench31.565.0
  • Terminal-Bench is very close.
  • On SWE-Marathon, a long coding test, Kimi is ahead.
  • On ProgramBench, Opus scores about double.
  • There is no SWE-bench Verified score at all, the test most developers know.

Maximum effort is the slowest and most expensive setting, so your daily results can be lower. Treat the charts as a hint and your own tests as the truth.

4 common errors and fixes

1. HTTP 400 on every request. K3.1 Pro only works with thinking on. Remove any setting that turns thinking off. To go faster, lower the reasoning effort instead.

2. The answers feel weaker than expected. Check the model ID. Kimi’s docs warn that a typo can fall back to an older model. Use kimi-k3.1-pro exactly.

3. Kimi Code doesn’t show K3.1 Pro. You’re on the free plan. Use the web chat, the API, or upgrade to Plus.

4. You find “K3.1 Pro weights” on Hugging Face before 4 November. Those are community uploads. Only trust the official Moonshot AI organization page.

Verdict: can Kimi K3.1 Pro replace Claude?

  • Daily Laravel coding: stay with Claude. Kimi costs the same as Sonnet, so there’s no saving, and Claude Code is the more proven tool.
  • Long agent tasks on a budget: test Kimi. On Moonshot’s numbers it’s close to Opus at half the price.
  • Self-hosting: watch Kimi after 4 November, if you have the hardware to run it.

FAQ

Is Kimi K3.1 Pro free?
Only in the web chat, with limited usage. The API costs $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, and Kimi Code needs the Plus plan ($15 a month billed yearly).

Is Kimi K3.1 Pro open source?
No. Moonshot promises open weights by 4 November 2026. The K3 license is a modified MIT license with conditions, so it is open weight, not open source.

Is Kimi K3.1 Pro cheaper than Claude?
It costs the same as Claude Sonnet 5.5 and half as much as Claude Opus 5.5.

Is Kimi K3.1 Pro better than Claude Opus 5.5 for coding?
On Moonshot’s own benchmarks it’s close: slightly behind on Terminal-Bench 4.0, ahead on SWE-Marathon, and far behind on ProgramBench. Test it on your own code before you switch.

Can I run Kimi K3.1 Pro locally?
Not on a normal computer. Moonshot recommends 64 or more accelerators for K3.
