# Windows 10 Updates Didn’t End on October 13, 2026: Here’s How to Check Your PC

**Watch the 90-second video:**

For months, the date people heard was **October 13, 2026**: the day Windows 10 home PCs would stop getting security updates. That’s not quite what happened.

Microsoft quietly extended the consumer **Extended Security Updates (ESU)** program to **October 12, 2027**. The catch: your PC only gets those updates **if it’s enrolled**. A Windows 10 PC that was never enrolled hasn’t had a security patch since October 2025.

## Key dates

| Date | What happens |

| — | — |

| October 14, 2025 | Windows 10 end of support. Non-enrolled PCs stop getting security updates. |

| October 13, 2026 | Old consumer ESU end date. Commercial ESU Year 1 ends. |

| October 12, 2027 | New consumer ESU end date. Commercial ESU Year 2 ends. |

## Check your PC in 3 steps

### 1. Check your Windows version

Press **Windows + R**, type `winver`, and press Enter. You need **Windows 10 version 22H2**. If you’re on an older version, install all updates first.

### 2. Look for the “Enroll now” link

Open **Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update**. If you see **Enroll now** near the top, your PC is **not** enrolled and isn’t receiving security updates.

### 3. Check your update history

Click **View update history**. If the newest monthly security update is from **October 2025**, your PC has been unpatched for a year.

## How to enroll (home PCs)

Click **Enroll now** and pick one option:

– **Free:** sync your PC settings to a Microsoft account. In the European Economic Area, it’s free as long as you keep signing in with a Microsoft account.

– **1,000 Microsoft Rewards points.**

– **$30 one-time purchase** (plus tax).

One license covers **up to 10 PCs**. You need an administrator Microsoft account (not a child account) and Windows 10 22H2 Home, Pro, Pro Education or Pro for Workstations.

## Work PCs are different

PCs joined to an Active Directory domain, Microsoft Entra ID, MDM, or running in kiosk mode can’t use the consumer program. They need **commercial ESU**, bought by your IT team. **Year 1 ended on October 13, 2026**, the price doubles each year, and buying Year 2 also means paying for Year 1.

## ESU is a bridge, not a fix

Extended updates only cover critical and important security fixes: no new features and no support. Use the extra year to plan your move:

– Run the **PC Health Check** app to see if your PC can run Windows 11.

– Upgrade eligible PCs, and budget to replace the rest before **October 2027**.

## Quick checklist
