Claude Duet Explained: Anthropic’s Proactive AI Agent for Developers

Short answer: Claude Duet is a new app from Anthropic where Claude works as a proactive agent. Instead of waiting for you to open a chat, it watches your inbox, calendar and connected apps, sends you a short brief every morning, and messages you when something needs you. It reads and drafts on its own, but it asks for your approval before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes anything. It launched on October 21, 2026 as a research preview, on a waitlist for Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the US.

I build Laravel APIs and Next.js front ends for clients, so the first thing I wanted to know was simple: can Duet help a developer, and where? Here is what Anthropic has actually published, and my take.

What Claude Duet is

Anthropic’s announcement calls it “a new app where Claude works as a proactive agent.” The normal Claude app waits for you. Duet comes to you:

  • Morning brief: each morning it sends a short summary of the most important items across your connected apps.
  • Checks in the background: it looks at your connected accounts every few hours (not constantly, to save your usage limits) and messages you only when something needs your attention.
  • Keeps working when you leave: it runs on a virtual machine in the cloud with its own browser, so your laptop or phone can be off.
  • One thread: you message it by typing or voice in one ongoing conversation. Your Claude memory, skills and connected apps carry over from your Claude account.

How approvals keep you in control

This is the part that matters most if you plan to connect your business email or payments.

  1. Free actions: Duet can read, draft and prepare work on its own.
  2. Approval actions: before it sends, pays, signs or deletes, it shows you the exact action, the destination and the content (every recipient included), then waits for you to approve.
  3. No “don’t ask again” for risky actions: paying or sending money, deleting an order and creating an account always need a fresh approval.
  4. Blocked even with approval: trading securities, moving money between bank accounts, and accessing someone else’s account.

Anthropic’s safety article adds a few details I like as a developer:

  • It never sees your credentials. Passwords are typed into a form inside the Claude app and passed encrypted to the cloud browser. Sign-in tokens never enter the machine where the agent works; a proxy outside that machine fills in the real value.
  • A separate approval check (built on the auto mode classifier from Claude Code) runs outside the model doing the work, so instructions hidden in a web page can’t approve an action.
  • A sensitive-info classifier checks drafts before they go out. Card numbers, bank numbers, government IDs and sign-in credentials are never shared, even if you ask. Health and finance details go out only with your consent.
  • Purchases use a one-time card from Link (Stripe) limited to that merchant and amount.

How developers can use Claude Duet today

Here is the honest bit. The headline on some news sites promises a developer story, but Anthropic’s pages describe no Duet API, no SDK and no GitHub, Jira or Linear connector. Duet won’t review your pull requests. For coding, Claude Code is still the tool.

Where Duet fits is the work around the code: your freelance back office. It works with more than 6,000 connectors and plugins, including Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack, Stripe, Intuit QuickBooks, HubSpot, Notion and Google Drive.

A realistic week for me:

  • Client email triage: “Flag any client email that asks for a scope change.” Duet surfaces “Can we add a login page before Friday?” before I miss it.
  • Unpaid invoices: with Stripe or QuickBooks connected, it spots that INV-1042 for $1,200 is 9 days late and drafts a polite reminder signed “Abd, mouhimen.dev”. I approve, then it sends.
  • Calendar: it tells me the standup moved to 10:30 and preps a short status note from my Slack threads.
  • Follow-ups: HubSpot leads that went quiet get a drafted nudge, waiting for my approval.

A good first message to Duet looks like this:

Every morning, tell me:
1. Client emails that need a reply today (ignore newsletters).
2. Stripe invoices more than 7 days overdue, with a draft reminder.
3. Meetings that moved or clash.
Never send anything without my approval.

Errors and limits to know

  • It can misjudge urgency. Anthropic says it “might misread a thread or miscalibrate what’s urgent,” and it can miss something that arrives between check-ins. Don’t rely on it for production alerts; keep your real monitoring.
  • It can’t show you its browser yet. You see the results and approval cards, not a live view.
  • It uses your plan limits. Background checks and big tasks (decks, financial models) eat into the same Pro/Max limits as your normal Claude chats.
  • Disconnecting is not forgetting. Disconnecting an app stops new access, but what Duet already learned stays until you reset its memory in the app’s settings. Deleting your account wipes everything.
  • Not available? Outside the US, or on Team/Enterprise, you can’t join yet. Anthropic hasn’t given a date for wider access.

My tip

Start small. Connect one inbox and one calendar for the first week, read every approval card carefully, then add Stripe or QuickBooks once you trust its judgment. And check its memory now and then: it is the one place your client details can quietly pile up.

FAQ

A separate Anthropic app where Claude acts as a proactive agent: it watches your connected apps, briefs you each morning, does work in the background, and asks before it acts on your behalf.

It’s included in Claude Pro and Max with the same usage limits. It is not on the free plan, and Team and Enterprise are not included yet.
